In May 2026, the STRATERRA team was invited by Chaco Vivo to conduct fieldwork between Puerto Casado and Loma Plata. Before that, the team visited Chaco Vivo’s head office in Asuncion, trying to gauge what the Chaco’s murky plans might be, and how well aligned our software’s assumptions regarding accessibility and representativeness really are.

Fast forward: our researchers Javier, Berenice, and Ron, together with Prof. Bonnie Waring from Imperial College London, collected soil samples and field observations for STRATERRA’s soil carbon and soil biodiversity mapping workflow. We’re working at the forefront of soil science, where data remains scarce and boots on muddy ground are required. Rainfall was unusually high this season, our routes had to be read day by day to ensure we can reach our required forest site.

While the Chaco’s plan was different, we were able to adapt, and collected valuable insight for future analyses. A full field report is coming soon. We will introduce our approach in more detail, provide photos, and share our upcoming plans! Stay tuned!
A huge thank you to the Chaco Vivo crew for guiding the team through the Chaco, organising access, and supporting the sampling throughout the campaign.
